CLAUDIA POLO 'Fair Trade Fashion & Accessories' - Case study by Business Link

A strong desire to address social and economical issues led Ecuadorian-born Claudia Polo to develop the concept behind the eco-friendly CLAUDIA POLO 'Fair Trade Fashion and Accessories'. Designed in England and handmade in Ecuador by a specially selected group of artisans, Claudia’s pieces are constructed using 100% natural fibres and material.

Claudia got in touch with Business Link West Midlands after carrying out successful trials in various boutiques across the Midlands. Her Business Link adviser explained: “I was really impressed with the amount of market research Claudia had carried out when she first made contact with Business Link.

“It was clear that Claudia had identified a gap in the market and we were more than happy to provide her with the support she needed to capitalise on the organic and eco-friendly nature of the business.”

The advice offered by Business Link extended beyond just the initial start-up stages. Claudia commented: “I was not only shown how to create a comprehensive business plan and marketing strategy but was also given advice on how to manage and run the company effectively and efficiently.

“The guidance I received has really helped me to feel confident about the future. Business Link provided me with the skills and support to turn my ideas into a successful reality.”

Combining British design with Ecuadorian talent provides not just an ethical product, but an opportunity for the talented artisans who carry out Claudia’s design to work their way to a better standard of living. Claudia explained: “By working and supporting the people who make my products, I help to provide a way for disadvantaged communities and women to make a living whilst also preserving skills that have been passed on from generation to generation.

“Having Business Link on my side really motivated and inspired me to work hard at developing the business.”

Business Link is pleased to report that Claudia’s business is doing well, highlighting: “Business is going strong for Claudia. She is in the process of creating a full e-commerce website and continues to get new customers. I am thrilled at the progress the business is making.”
